Accounts Receivable: Management and Analysis, written by Harry Howe, Ph.D. and Mark C. Mitschow, Ph.D., explains and analyzes Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) relating to the valuation and presentation of accounts receivable (AR) and offers insights on best-practices for both the internal reporting of AR and the use of AR information for analysis and management purposes.  

On the theory that recording AR balances is a mature and well-documented process, we focus relatively little attention on the traditional “accounting for AR.” While vendors continue to work on the integration of these interrelated functions into one seamless cradle-to-grave application, the benefits of this approach are counterpoised by problems with integration across both IT platforms and organizational cultures (e.g., sales, credit, and collections). 

Drawing on a combination of authoritative literature on external reporting and research from practitioner and academic sources, this Portfolio explores aspects of forecasting and valuation that go beyond the use of simple percentages and weighted averages to statistical techniques. Each of the approaches addressed, including regression analysis and Markov chains, can be readily implemented through Excel. 

This Portfolio considers both the theory and application of the methods used to analyze AR and related balances, and it explores reasons why entities analyze the AR balance.  It also addresses both calculation procedures and critiques of these procedures, and it is accompanied by extensive application examples. Topics in this section include the Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) measure and several related calculations, DSO-alternative measures which are less distorted by variations in the pattern of sales, variance analysis, several types of traditional financial statement analysis, statistical decomposition analysis, and concentration ratios. 

Industry-specific factors influence the calculation and reporting of AR. This Portfolio thus discusses in detail practices that arise in numerous industries, including health services, construction contracting, agriculture, oil and gas, airlines, software and bundled products, franchising, hospitality, regulated utilities, retail, newspapers, casinos, insurance companies, real estate brokers, apparel, and food distributors.

In addition, this Portfolio provides a thematic overview of the five principal areas in which computer tools support the creation of, management of, and accounting for AR balances: credit scoring, recording sales transactions, e-billing, auto posting of cash remittances, and collection software for managing the problem of customers who have not paid on a timely basis. The intent underlying these sections is to survey current practices with a view towards suggesting strategies for organizing the AR process, with particular emphasis on trends and developments in the area of integrating and automating related activities, and on relatively newer areas in the AR cycle, such as credit scoring and collections software.  

The work also addresses the use of AR-related accounting information and provides practical examples of how this information may be used in statement analysis, credit decisions, forecasting, and similar activities.

Harry Howe
Harry Howe, B.A., Brown University; MBA (Accounting), Graduate Management Institute, Union College; Ph.D., Union College. Associate Professor and Coordinator of Accounting Program, State University of New York (SUNY), College at Geneseo. Mark Mitschow
Mark C. Mitschow, Ph.D. (Accounting), University of Maryland at College Park. Associate Professor of Accounting, State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo, teaching primarily financial accounting courses. His research interests include business ethics, the financial services industry, and the accounting profession. Dr. Mitschow has authored 15 peer-reviewed articles (in journals including Research on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting, The CPA Journal, and the Journal of Business Ethics) and 24 conference presentations.
