In this opening session of the 15th Annual National Asbestos Litigation Conference: Emerging Issues for the Most Active Jurisdictions in 2012, the faculty discusses the decline of multi district litigation (MDL) and whether this will benefit plaintiffs, new considerations for the defense, and the Constitutionality of new guidelines. This content is presented through a Bloomberg BNA and HB Litigation Conferences partnership.

Recent litigation in various jurisdictions nationwide is addressed in detail, including litigation in upstate New York, New York City and California. The faculty also addresses the status of equipment cases such as O’Neil v. Crane Co. and Taylor v. Elliott Turbomachinery, increased filings in Illinois, and the impact of the Florida Supreme Court ruling on the state’s Asbestos Act.

Joseph Belluck, Belluck & Fox
Joseph W. Belluck is a founding partner of Belluck & Fox with substantial experience in the firm’s asbestos and mesothelioma cases. He is a dedicated, compassionate attorney who has spent his entire legal career representing injured consumers and workers. Joe has a national reputation for excellence in asbestos and mesothelioma litigation. He has been recognized for both his legal work and high ethical standards. Mr. Belluck is a magna cum laude graduate of the Buffalo School of Law.

Linda Clark, Hiscock & Barclay LLP
Linda Clark concentrates her litigation practice in the areas of state and federal, commercial, mass tort, health care and class-action/group claim litigation. She has extensive experience representing Fortune 500 and national/global clients as national, regional and local counsel in commercial class/mass actions and toxic tort cases of many genres, including representation of large groups of business and institutional clients prosecuting and defending claims brought in state and federal court, and over 15 years of experience as regional, national and court-appointed liaison counsel and trial counsel in asbestos litigation. Ms. Clark earned a J.D., cum laude, from Albany Law School of Union University and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Sienna College.

Christian Hartley, Maune Raichle Hartley French & Mudd, LLC
Mr. Hartley’s firm focuses exclusively on representing victims of asbestos injury – primarily mesothelioma victims – with an emphasis on individual case preparation. He formerly was a member of Richardson, Patrick, Westbrook & Brickman, LLC. Mr. Hartley earned a J.D. from Arizona State University College of Law a B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Brian Huelsmann, HeplerBroom LLC
Brian Huelsmann focuses his practice on trials involving complex business litigation matters, including toxic torts, personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice, and commercial litigation. He has represented clients in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and is regional counsel for several defendants in asbestos, benzene and silica litigation. He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University Law School and Rockhurst University.

Michael Pietrykowski, Gordon & Rees LLP
As a partner at Gordon & Rees, Mr. Pietrykowski has built an active litigation practice throughout California. His practice focuses on toxic tort and environmental matters and he is Chair of Gordon & Rees's national Environmental and Toxic Tort practice group. He serves as both National and Regional Counsel for defendants, regularly appearing in courts throughout the U.S. Mr. Pietrykowski is a very active participant in a national industry focus group and, as such, participates in thought leadership discussions involving defense strategies for a sector of the asbestos litigation. Mr. Pietrykowski earned J.D., M.A., and B.A. degrees from the University of Notre Dame.

John Langdoc, Baron & Budd, P.C.
John Langdoc is no stranger to the complex medical and scientific issues involved in the cases he tries. Before becoming a lawyer, he was a scientist who studied how the brain works. At Baylor College of Medicine, he researched the brains of people with schizophrenia, depression, and autism. Earlier, in graduate school, he helped discover that some prescription anti-depressants can cause brain birth defects.

As a lead trial attorney, Mr. Langdoc has been successful in obtaining some of the most significant verdicts of their kind, across the country. Some of his recent verdicts include a $9M verdict against the Dow Chemical Company for a man who was exposed to carcinogens while working at their plant, Dow has announced that it plans to continue to have lawyers fight the verdict on appeal; a $20M verdict for a woman who was unknowingly exposed to carcinogens from drywall when she helped her husband clean up on some home remodeling projects, the verdict was upheld on appeal in California; a $12M verdict for a man who was exposed to carcinogens at a paper mill, the verdict resulted in a settlement agreement the day after the verdict in Pennsylvania; an $8M verdict for the wife of a man who was exposed to carcinogens as a pipefitter, and an $11M verdict for a man who was exposed to carcinogens as a painter.
