Baucus to Hold Nomination Hearing for Tavenner

RSS

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus plans to hold a confirmation hearing on the nomination of Marilyn Tavenner to be administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. CMS has not had a Senate-confirmed administrator since 2006.

Baucus told me Feb. 12 that the hearing would be held "soon" and he predicted Tavenner would be confirmed by the full Senate. President Obama Feb. 7 renominated Tavenner for the post. He first nominated her late in 2011 but the Finance Committee did not take up the nomination.

Tavenner's first nomination failed in the Senate after Baucus declined to hold a confirmation hearing for her, due to possible opposition from Republicans and expected tough questions over implementation of the Affordable Care Act.

Since that time, however, some observers say the anger among ACA opponents has softened, which, combined with Tavenner's popularity among Democrats and Republicans and provider groups, may make it possible for her nomination to get through the Senate.
