Who sponsors the contest?

The new contest is jointly sponsored by BNA, a leading publisher in the IP area, and the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law (ABA- IPL), and will be an annual award, The BNA/ABA Young IP Lawyer Writing Award.

Who is eligible?

The contest is open to lawyers who are either under the age of 36 or have been practicing in the field of IP for under five years. Entrants do not need to be members of the ABA.

What should entries be about?

The BNA/ABA Young IP Lawyer Writing Award will recognize superior writing concerning a current topic, trend, issue, or legal development in the U.S. or foreign intellectual property law.

What are the judging criteria?

Submissions will be judged on research and analysis, choice of topic, writing style, originality, and contribution to the literature on the topic.

How long should the entries be?

Length should be between 10-15 double-spaced pages. Entries must be original and unpublished works.

Nomination Procedure

Qualified recipients should self-nominate. Entries should be accompanied by a cover letter indicating that the entrant meets the qualifications of the contest.

Deadline

The deadline for entries will be midnight May 15.

Judges

A three-judge panel will be chosen by BNA and may include a BNA editor as the chair. Judges will be chosen for their knowledge of the area and their reputation. The majority of the members of the panel will be members of the ABA. Depending on the volume of submissions, BNA editors will winnow the entries to the sent to the judges for their consideration.

Award Presentation

A presentation will be held at appropriate session at the ABA Annual Meeting, with the presenters being a judge and/or a BNA editor.

Award

The winning article will be published as an Insight article by BNA in the appropriate BNA publications(s) pursuant to BNA’s usual arrangements with outside authors.

BNA will give the winner his or her choice of one of three treatises: Patent Litigation Strategies Handbook, Third Edition; Trademark Infringement Remedies (with supplement); Drafting Patents for Litigation and Licensing(with supplement), or The Copyright Law Deskbook (with supplement).

In addition, the winner will receive a certificate from BNA.
