The faculty for this program will discuss cloud computing from both a customer’s and a vendor’s perspectives. They will highlight real-life concerns, while debunking several myths about cloud computing.

Learning about the cloud will enable participants to quickly assess whether or not a cloud application is right for their business from a legal and regulatory perspective.

Data security and privacy will be discussed from both United States and European perspectives. Participants will gain key insights in to both contractual and extra-contractual approaches to ensuring information is protected, with emphasis on practical steps which can be taken when a customer adopts a cloud strategy.

Shanti Ariker, salesforce.com
Shanti Ariker is Managing Counsel in the Toronto office of salesforce.com, the leading provider of cloud computing enterprise services. She and her team negotiate cloud computing customer agreements and often address security and privacy-related issues in both Canada and the United States. Ms. Ariker previously worked at Celestica, where she negotiated customer agreements. Before that, she was Associate General Counsel at E*TRADE and a technology start-up in Silicon Valley and worked in private practice at several U.S. law firms.

Ms. Ariker earned a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and is called to the bar in Ontario as well as the bars of New York, California and Wisconsin. She earned a B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts. Ms. Ariker speaks fluent Hebrew and served two years in the Israel Defense Forces. She is active in her community and currently serves on the Canadian Advisory Board for the Salesforce.com Foundation.

Michael P. Bennett, Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP
Michael Bennett is a partner in the Intellectual Property Department of Edwards Wildman. His entire legal career has been spent advising technology companies as well as companies acquiring technology products on the legal issues inherent in existing and emerging technology. For nearly 20 years, Mr. Bennett has counseled clients on their use of technology and has provided strategies to avoid the legal pitfalls that frequently arise from such use. He consults with clients on a variety of technology issues including cloud computing, mitigation of risk associated with the use and distribution of software licensed under an open source model, data security and privacy issues, and the use of marketing data in a manner that does not violate various federal, state and international laws. On behalf of technology consumers, Mr. Bennett has negotiated transactions with nearly every major provider of hardware and software operating systems and applications. These negotiations include traditional inbound and outbound licensing, development agreements, distribution, customization, and implementation. He has represented clients acquiring SaaS services, traditional outsourcing, business process outsourcing, and facilities management services and has negotiated on behalf of Northrop Grumman the largest private/public outsourcing IT agreement at the time, valued at $2 billion.

Mr. Bennett earned a J.D. from Loyola University of Chicago and a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame. He is admitted to practice in Illinois.

Richard Graham, Edwards Wildman Palmer LLP
Richard Graham is a partner in Edwards Wildman’s London office, where he specializes in technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) matters and strategic outsourcing transactions. He is actively involved in a wide variety of industry sectors, including the TMT, broadcasting, healthcare, banking and insurance sectors. Mr. Graham’s practice includes providing commercial and regulatory support in connection with IT, communications, media, e-commerce, broadcasting and gambling projects. He also regularly advises clients in connection with privacy, data protection and information security matters and sits on the firm's Privacy & Data Protection Group Steering Committee. Mr. Graham is recognized in Chambers and Partners 2013 as having a "wealth of experience" in information technology law. He is also recognized as a leading practitioner in the U.K. in the current edition of the Who's Who Legal Directory of Internet, E-Commerce & Data Protection Lawyers.

Mr. Graham earned a Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge and is admitted in the courts of England and Wales.

Hardship Policy

For attorneys who are unemployed or earning less than $35,000 per year, a full discount off the price of the program will be awarded upon written proof of hardship. Attorneys earning between $35,000 and $50,000 per year will receive a 50% discount off the price of the program. Any attorney working in the public service sector also qualifies for a special price.
