Competing interests in the debate over collecting sales taxes on electronically sold goods remain at odds over inexpensive computer software that is supposed to make the task easier and accurate for merchants, but perhaps does not always. With disagreements evident on that point, and federal lawmakers still hashing out details of a proposed exemption on e-commerce sales tax collection for small businesses, legislation clearing the way for states to enforce the tax collections may not have much chance at passage in 2012, lobbyists and congressional staffers tell BNA.
