According to a Parisian restaurateur (quoted in the New York Times), “in the United States, waiters can be fired at any time and must work for tips, so they have to be nice. In France, you can't just fire someone if they're not doing a good job. If you could, everyone would be friendly.”

U.S. employment-at-will is unique in the world. And this puts American employers at an unfortunate disadvantage when they venture out and employ people abroad. Too many American multinationals commit awkward, non-compliant practices when they branch out and employ staff overseas, especially when they venture into Europe, where pay rates are high and employment laws can be particularly rigid.

In this session, join an employment lawyer from London and an international employment lawyer from the states as they guide you on a tour of Europe’s employment laws, highlighting the often stark differences between European and U.S. rules.  In this program you will learn:

•What does Europe matter to US headquarters human resources?
•The challenge of the uniqueness of US employment-at-will
•Employment law in Europe: A whirlwind tour
•“Firing law” in Europe
•The most vital HR law topics as they play out in Europe:
   EEO
   Unions and works councils
   Wage/hour/work time
   “Acquired rights”/“transfers of undertakings”/TUPE
Data privacy in the HR information system context
