IRS begins sending out test results to tax return preparers who have taken the new preparer competency test, but is not yet providing information about the pass-fail rates for the exams. Those who pass the test and a tax compliance check will be given a new designation as a “registered tax return preparer,” IRS says. Since the test became available in November, IRS says, it has been in a “calibration phase” as the agency validated test questions and set the passing score. Paul Cinquemani, director of member relations at the National Association of Tax Professionals, says the group has been heavily involved in training its members for the exams and would like to get some information from IRS about success rates.
