Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Ranking Member Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) Jan. 22 introduced legislation repealing the individual health insurance mandate in the Affordable Care Act. The measure is not expected to clear the Senate, although it garnered the support of 30 senators in the 112th Congress.
The American Liberty Restoration Act would strike the mandate in ACA requiring individuals to purchase health insurance that will be implemented in 2014.
"Never before has the federal government forced the American people to purchase something they may not want," the lawmakers said in a press release.
Congressional Republicans in 2013 are expected to continue their efforts to dismantle or delay all or parts of the health care reform law. With President Ohama reelected and Democrats still in charge of the Senate, however, most of these efforts will be symbolic.
