On July 1, 2009, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) launched a bold, new audit initiative by issuing Notices of Inspection (NOIs) to 652 businesses nationwide which is more than ICE issued throughout all of last fiscal year. Janet Napolitano, Secretary, Department of Homeland Security, also announced that the government will push to add E-Verify requirements to all federal contracts after September 8th.
The 652 NOIs alert business owners that ICE will be inspecting their hiring records to determine whether or not they are complying with employment eligibility verification laws and regulations. This crackdown and ICEs more routine use of civil penalties can result in fines of $110 to $3,600 per unauthorized worker or per I-9 Form.
