Now What? Implications of the Supreme Court's Decision on Health Reform

With the federal health reform legislation pending before the United States Supreme Court, there has been much anticipation about the results of the Court’s decision and the effects that the decision will have. The faculty for this program will summarize what was before the court and what the court decided and will then discuss the implications stemming from the decision.

Topics will include what happens next in the courts; what the implications are generally for the U.S. economy (i) at the state level; (ii) at certain federal agencies; (iii) for the pending elections; (iv) for the federal legislative agenda (lame duck and new Congress 2013); and (v) for the Medicare Program going forward. The debt reduction law that triggers a two-percent cut in Medicare payments unless Congress acts before January 1, 2013 will also be discussed.

Lynn Shapiro Snyder, Senior Member of Epstein Becker & Green, P.C., has been with the firm 32 years and is based in the Washington, D.C. office. Ms. Snyder has been named one of the most powerful people in health care and recognized as an outstanding health lawyer in many publications. She is the founder and President of the Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation and serves on the boards of several companies.

Ms. Snyder earned a J.D. from George Washington University Law School and an A.B., magna cum laude, in Economics with a Health Economics concentration from Franklin & Marshall College, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Leslie Norwalk, EBG Advisors
Leslie Norwalk is Strategic Counsel at EBG Advisors and formerly served as Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). She also currently serves as an advisor to several private equity firms and is a board member of six health care companies. She worked with EBG Advisors both before and after her tenure at CMS.

Ms. Norwalk earned a J.D. from George Mason University School of Law, where she was Business Editor of the George Mason Law Review and Dean's Scholar, and a B.A., cum laude, from Wellesley College in Economics and International Relations.

Mary R. Grealy, Healthcare Leadership Council
Mary Grealy is president of the Healthcare Leadership Council, a coalition of chief executives of the nation’s leading healthcare companies and organizations. The HLC advocates consumer-centered health care reform, emphasizing the value of private sector innovation. It is the only health policy advocacy group that represents all sectors of the healthcare industry. She was appointed to the position in August 1999.

Ms. Grealy has an extensive background in healthcare policy. She has led important initiatives on the uninsured, improving patient safety and quality, protecting the privacy of patient medical information and reforming the medical liability laws. She testifies frequently before Congress and federal regulatory agencies.

She is a frequent public speaker on health issues and has been ranked many times by Modern Healthcare as one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare and has been named to Modern Healthcare’s list of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare for 2009.

Hardship Policy
Bloomberg BNA offers a hardship policy for any attorney earning less than $30,000 per year.
