In a volatile global economy, more and more companies are looking to reduce the number of regular employees and replace them with non-employees. Independent contractors, sales agents, agency or dispatch employees, or employees under fixed-term employment arrangements, are just some of the categories of workers impacted by this ever-increasing trend. In the United States, for example, research indicates that companies now use more than 10 million independent contractors.

Internationally, given the lack of at-will employment, the temptation to use non-employees is even higher. In Japan, for instance, the percentage of non-regular workers has more than doubled in the last few decades, rising to almost 34 percent of the total workforce. Other foreign jurisdictions are increasingly concerned, adopting new laws that limit the use of these non-regular workers, or enforcing employee status laws already on the books.

Join international labor & employment lawyer Ute Krudewagen, partner at DLA Piper in Silicon Valley, and Melynnie Rizvi, Senior Corporate Counsel at Symantec Corporation as they cover the following learning objectives:

  • How to distinguish the various categories of non-employees
  • Where use of such non-employees may be appropriate
  • Pitfalls and liabilities when things go wrong
  • Trends, developments and new laws around the globe
