IRS Expediting Sandy Charity Applications, Offers Leave Donation Break

Wednesday, November 7, 2012
IRS says it will expedite the review and approval process for organizations seeking tax-exempt status in order to provide relief to victims of Hurricane Sandy. IRS says organizations seeking expedited review of their exempt status applications should write “Disaster Relief, Hurricane Sandy” at the top of Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Tax Code Section 501(c)(3). In addition, the Service says it will offer special tax relief to encourage employee leave donation programs. IRS says the donated leave will not be included in the income or wages of the employees, and employers will be permitted to deduct the cash payments.
