The 738,000 tax return preparers with preparer tax identification numbers can begin seeking renewals for the 2012 filing season, IRS says. Preparers must annually renew PTINs before each new filing season begins. For the 2012 filing season, PTINs must be renewed by Dec. 31, IRS says. The PTIN is part of new tax preparer registration requirements that bring unenrolled tax preparers under the jurisdiction of Circular 230 for the first time. PTINs are required for all individuals who are paid to prepare, or help prepare, all or most of a tax return or a refund claim.
