A massive joint IRS and law enforcement crackdown on identify theft, much of it stemming from hospitals and schools, has led to 939 criminal charges and the arrest of 58 people, Steven Miller, IRS deputy commissioner for services and enforcement, tells reporters. The effort is one of the more significant victories for the service, which has labored for years to improve its image as the protector of tax refunds. “Identity thieves have figured out that if they can steal Social Security numbers, they can file false refunds with us,” Miller says. Once the numbers are stolen, they are sold to crooks.
