IRS releases a raft of guidance relating to tax preparers, establishing new user fees to take the registered tax return preparer competency exam, and a new user fee for fingerprinting in conjunction with the program. Proposed rules (REG-116284-11) set the IRS portion of the user fee for the competency exam at $27 and the fee for fingerprinting at $33. The fees to be charged by third-party vendors were not announced, but the total fees, including the IRS user fees, are expected to be between $60 and $90 for fingerprinting, and $100 to $125 for testing, IRS says.
