John G. Schmalz is a Managing Director in PricewaterhouseCoopers Washington National Tax Services. Mr. Schmalz consults with clients and practice offices on issues involving the federal taxation of partnerships and partners—issues on which he is nationally recognized for his expertise. Mr. Schmalz joined the firm in 1987, after eight years of service in the IRS.

Mr. Schmalz provides such tax services for partnerships as review of partnership agreements for IRS regulatory compliance, development of strategies to form joint ventures, tax planning to minimize tax costs, and coordination of private letter ruling requests.

While at the IRS as an Attorney-Advisor, Legislation and Regulations Division, Office of the Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service, he wrote the regulations on the allocation of income, gain, loss and deduction among partners, and was involved with the draft regulations on allocations attributable to property contributed to the partnership and allocation of liabilities among partners. Mr. Schmalz also wrote the regulations on the investment tax credit for rehabilitation expenditures.

Mr. Schmalz is a frequent speaker and author of articles on the topics of partnership taxation, passive activity losses and cancellation of indebtedness income.
