This program provides practical intellectual property guidance for executives and entrepreneurs and the counsel advising them to improve the company’s bottom line.

Sitting at your desk, you look down at the company’s ledger and review the bottom line. It is not where it needs to be. As technology is important to your company, you fully appreciate why your company is spending as much money as it is on research and development and intellectual property services. You are also painfully aware that in this day of commodization, entirely too much money is being spent on service providers that do not invest in learning about a company’s business, let alone a company’s business needs. A question nags at you: How do we know if the money in our IP budget is being well spent? This program provides practical intellectual property guidance for executives and entrepreneurs and the counsel advising them to improve the company’s bottom line.

Among many other issues, learn (i) how to choose which ideas are the ones you should try to protect; (ii) whether patents, trademarks, or copyrights would be best to use with your products or services to limit competition and protect your investments; (iii) where the greatest threat to your IP comes from--competition, knock‐offs or grey market, or defecting employees; (iv) what your company can do to identify, develop, and protect your IP assets; (v) if a patent ends up in litigation, the likelihood of adjudication versus settlement; (vi) whether registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is required before your company begins to use the mark; and (vii) what your company should be most concerned about regarding trade secrets.

Educational Objectives:

• Learn to work backwards
• Understand the basics of intellectual property
• Avoid common mistakes
• Include IP strategy as part of the company’s core business strategy
