Arlington, Va. (October 2, 2008) – BNA today announced that top officials Nancy Nord, Acting Chairman; Cheryl Falvey, General Counsel; and John “Gib” Mullan, Director, Office of Compliance and Field Operations, of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, will address its upcoming conference on the new regulatory and enforcement standards contained in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.

The conference will be held at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C. on October 30, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The new law, passed by Congress in the spring and signed into law by President Bush in August, addresses among its many provisions the unprecedented number of consumer product recalls within the last year and a half. Some of the changes in the law, including some of the new safety standards and new rules addressing the accreditation of safety laboratories, begin to take effect even before a new Administration takes office in 2009.

This one-day conference will highlight the wide-ranging ways in which the law will affect manufacturers and retailers of consumer products, including:

  • The rapid rollout of new federal standards on lead and phthalates (plasticizers)
  • Mandatory third-party testing of children’s products
  • The adoption of new regulatory standards and mandatory rules
  • The role of states in enforcing product safety
  • Product-specific provisions

Joining Ms. Nord, Ms. Falvey, and Mr. Mullan will be experienced CPSC practitioners and product liability defense lawyers, along with representatives of leading manufacturers and retailers responsible for product safety. The conference chair is Arvin Maskin, a partner in Weil Gotshal & Manges’ New York City office.
