In a Global Downturn, Need for Cross-Border Tax Information Stronger than Ever

Arlington, Va. (July 7, 2009) – The current economic climate makes the need for up-to-date cross-border tax information stronger than ever, according to Neil Smith, a consultant editor for BNA International’s just-published Global Tax Guide.

 “Different countries have been hit in different ways and this means that the most appropriate investment opportunity for a particular company may not be on the other side of town but on the other side of the world,” said Smith.

As the global economy recovers, and greater regulation inevitably takes effect, companies will need to ensure that their international operations are structured carefully.

The new Global Tax Guide provides tax profiles of 76 jurisdictions in the four key trading regions of Europe, Asia Pacific, the Americas and Middle East/Africa.

Stephen Edge, a partner with Slaughter and May and a leading corporate tax practitioner, believes this means investors and companies will be looking very closely at how their international operations are structured.

“Those who already have complicated structures will want to make sure that recent changes have not made their existing structure inappropriate or less efficient,” said Edge.

Written to a handy and user-friendly template, the Global Tax Guide includes analysis of:

  • Corporate Taxes;
  • Indirect Taxes;
  • Personal Taxes;
  • Transfer Pricing and Anti-Avoidance Rules; and
  • Tax Treaties, including tables of Tax Treaty Withholding Rates.

It also includes a handy reference table of tax rates, plus regional overviews.

Neil Smith provides further insight into how global economic policy is affecting tax policy across the world in a new, free podcast, Global Tax Planning in an Economic Downturn:
