Arlington, Va. (September 3, 2009) – BNA Books, a division of specialized news and information publisher BNA, announced today a 2009 update of the most comprehensive and widely used collection of key data about unions and union contacts. The Directory of U.S. Labor Organizations, 2009 Edition, is also the only complete directory of private and public-sector unions and union leaders in the United States.

Published annually, the Directory is a favored tool for reference and research, allowing for quick access to information on and analysis of:

  • membership and earnings figures compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics;
  • recent and pending union mergers and alliances;
  • union representation elections supervised by the National Labor Relations Board;
  • union mergers between 1995 and 2008;
  • names and addresses of AFL-CIO headquarters and state-elected officials and staff members;
  • the history, structure, and functions of the Federation and its Executive Council;
  • a listing of officers of Change to Win—the first major federation of unions to be formed since the founding of the AFL-CIO in 1955.

The Directory also offers clear explanations of federal reporting requirements for unions, and summaries of the rights of union members guaranteed by law. Four indexes listing each union by full name, abbreviation/acronym, officers and key staff, and website (if available) make this Directory both convenient and easy to use. The editor of the Directory is Court Gifford, a former editor of BNA’s Daily Law Report.
