Arlington, Va. (March 17, 2009) – What opportunities have arisen for S corporations in the recent economic stimulus package? What future opportunities or risks can S corporations and their shareholders expect from Congress and the Obama administration?

Two experts with Deloitte Tax LLP – partner Jim Calzaretta (Washington National Tax office) and senior manager Bart Massey (Tax Policy Group) – will offer their seasoned insights in a 60-90 minute BNA Tax & Accounting audiconference on March 30, 2009, starting at 1:00 pm.  At the heart of their presentation will be a discussion of current developments for S corporations, changes enacted as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), and the upcoming legislative agenda.

“Now S Corporations—the most common form of business entity—are more flexible than ever,” said BNA tax analyst Allen Calhoun. “ The window is open; temporary relief from the built-in gains tax, second-class-of-stock restriction, cancellation of debt income, limited carryback of NOLs, and other initiatives currently provide enormous planning opportunities for today’s businesses,”  he added.

The presentation will cover:

  • Recent changes enacted by the ARRA that affect treatment of built-in gains, cancellation of indebtedness, net operating losses, and depreciation;
  • How FIN 48 applies to S corporations;
  • Issues such as extension of COBRA benefits and the Making Work Pay credit that affect payroll management
  • Recently enacted AMT relief and future proposed tax increases that could affect S corporation shareholders
