In 2012, the cable industry, telephone companies, and direct broadcast satellite saw net customer growth flatten or decline in just about all of their residential offerings. That was due in part to intensifying competition—with phone companies now offering multichannel TV and cable operators offering home phone service, there are simply more competitors vying for customers. But the housing slump also continued, leaving the providers with few newly formed households to woo to their services.
