In an effort to maintain eroding tax bases, many state tax departments have set their sights on taxing new types of transactions such as social media discounts, and have targeted otherwise exempt entities, such as non–profit hospitals, according to experts speaking at the American Bar Association's recent State Tax Session held in Washington, D.C.
