Legislation that could force online retailers to collect sales taxes on sales made across state lines moved closer to reality with a key procedural vote in the Senate April 22.
The tally was 74-20 on a measure that clears the Marketplace Fairness Act (S. 743) for a vote in the Senate on April 24 or April 25. Lobbyists following the issue predicted a slew of amendments before then, largely from the bill's opponents who seek to limit its scope or render it ineffective but also, possibly, from supporters looking to hitch other issues onto legislation likely to pass.
