Senate Focuses on Amendments as House OKs Payroll Tax Cut Extension

The House votes 234-193 to pass legislation (H.R. 3630) that would extend the existing 2 percentage point payroll tax cut through 2012, but Senate Democrats say they intend to amend it to remove objectionable language and include tax extenders legislation. House Republican leaders express an expectation that the bill will be amended in the Senate and say they intend to stay in session until the bill is sent to the White House. But at the same time, Republicans warn that major changes to the House version would risk passage of the legislation prior to the end of the year.
