The faculty presenting this program will focus on improving the invention disclosure process for everyone involved in preparing patent applications. They will discuss updates to the application filing and invention disclosure processes in light of the America Invents Act (AIA) and will also address ways to best mine the user experience in the disclosure and drafting process.

The presentation will provide suggestions and best practice tips for revising the invention disclosure process and strategies that can be implemented to successfully capture the necessary details in the invention disclosure process.

• Learn how to perfect the invention disclosure process to best protect/mine the core of the user experience (UX) post-AIA.

• Discover ways to speed up the filing/patenting process in light of the new first-to-file system of the AIA.

• Understand the additional details that must be captured during the invention disclosure process in light of the AIA.

Peter Nguyen, S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc.
Peter Nguyen serves as Corporate and Patent Counsel at S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. In this role, he supports N.A. procurement and product supply; provides all patent services, including managing outside counsel, in support of corporate new products and insight innovation; and develops and provides the company-wide patent training module. He previously served as the company’s Patent Counsel, providing all patent services in support of home storage (Ziploc and Saran brands) and home cleaning (Scrubbing Bubbles, Windex, Fantastik and Drano brands), as well as litigation support. Prior to joining S.C. Johnson & Son, Mr. Nguyen served as intellectual property counsel at Procter & Gamble, where he supported family care (Bounty and Charmin brands), and prepared and prosecuted utility and design cases.

Mr. Nguyen earned a J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law, an M.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and a B.S. in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

Bradley J. Van Pelt, Banner & Witcoff, Ltd.
Brad Van Pelt is a shareholder in the Chicago office of Banner & Witcoff, Ltd. He concentrates on prosecution, counseling and litigation in all areas of intellectual property. He has years of patent drafting experience in the mechanical, computer and business method arts. Mr. Van Pelt frequently prepares freedom-to-practice opinions and has served on successful patent litigation teams. He started his career as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he examined patent applications directed to the mechanical arts, especially in the automotive, transportation and power generation arts, for more than three years. He also served in the chambers of Judge Richard Linn of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and worked as a design engineer for Sub-Zero Freezer Co.

Mr. Van Pelt earned a J.D. from Georgetown University and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice in Illinois.

Aseet Patel, Banner & Witcoff, Ltd.
Aseet Patel is a shareholder in the Chicago office of Banner & Witcoff, Ltd. He guides clients through all areas of intellectual property, including invention harvesting, patent procurement, portfolio management, trademark, copyright, litigation and licensing matters. He works closely with clients during new product launches to provide patent clearance opinions and I.P. counseling. Mr. Patel is actively involved in publishing and presenting on I.P. issues, particularly those of the digital startup and VC community. He also sits on the Board of the Chicago Intellectual Property Alliance and the Indian-American Bar Association of Chicago. Before joining the firm, Mr. Patel served as a U.S. Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he examined inventions on computer memory devices and algorithms. He also has worked as a consultant and programmer for a Texas software start-up.

Mr. Patel earned a J.D. from Loyola University, Chicago School of Law and a B.S. in computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted to practice in Illinois.

This program’s CLE-credit eligibility varies by state. Bloomberg BNA is an accredited provider in the states of New York*, California, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia, and most other jurisdictions grant CLE credit on a per-program basis. At this time, Bloomberg BNA does not apply directly to the states of Florida, Rhode Island, Montana and Hawaii although credit is usually available for attorneys who wish to apply individually. Additionally, the following states currently do not grant credit for Bloomberg BNA OnDemand programming: Arkansas, Ohio, Nebraska, and Delaware.
