Werfel Plans to Accelerate Approval of Backlogged Exempt Applications

Internal Revenue Service Principal Deputy Commissioner Daniel Werfel June 24 said he has initially found no intentional wrongdoing at IRS following a 30-day internal investigation of the agency's processes related to applications for tax exemption.
The investigation was the result of a May 14 Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration report that concluded the agency inappropriately targeted tea party and other conservative groups' applications for exemption (94 DTR GG-1, 5/15/13).
However, in a briefing with the media, Werfel added that more reviews are under way, including congressional probes, a Justice Department investigation, and additional auditing by TIGTA.
