Bloomberg brought the Sustainable Business Summit series to Seattle on June 15, 2017. Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, Starbucks’ CFO Scott Maw and Amazon’s Head of Worldwide Sustainability Kara Hurst joined other influential leaders in sustainability and business for an afternoon of discussion and networking.

Last year Starbucks issued the first U.S. Corporate Sustainability Bond, with the proceeds aimed at enhancing the company’s sustainable coffee sourcing. Starbucks CFO Scott Maw will discuss how sustainability has become integral to Starbucks’ strategy and finances, and how the company is investing in a comprehensive approach to integrating environmental and social factors in their global coffee supply chain and across their business.

    Emily Chasan is the editor of Bloomberg's weekly Sustainable Finance Brief. She covers trends in corporate sustainability and corporate governance and provides actionable insights for investors on sustainable, responsible and impact investment strategies.
    She was previously a senior editor at The Wall Street Journal's CFO Journal, which she helped launch, and a senior correspondent at Reuters where she covered accounting, law, hedge funds, manufacturing, and the U.S. stock market. She led the wire service's team of bankruptcy reporters during the financial crisis from 2008 to 2010.

    She has won two Front Page Awards from the Newswomen's Club of New York and in 2012 was named to the National Association of Corporate Directors' "Directorship 100" list of people most influential on corporate boards of directors.     Stephanie Cohn Rupp brings more than 17 years of experience in global impact investing, impact fund design and implementation, and microfinance, as well as crowd funding. 

    Stephanie is Head of Impact Investing, working closely with the firm’s CIO, Ron Albahary. She oversees all aspects of impact investing strategy and crafts mission-aligned portfolios for our clients. Stephanie’s extensive experience spanning the global ecosystem of impact brings with it a multifaceted toolkit of skills in sourcing, evaluating and measuring opportunities from both investment and impact perspectives. She is also the Head of the San Francisco Threshold Group Office, growing our local presence in the Bay Area.

    Most recently, Stephanie served as CEO of Toniic, a global action community of impact investors, who seek social and environmental impact through investment in all asset classes. She led all aspects of strategy, growth and operations for the San Francisco-based organization. She scaled the organization from 35 to over 300 families and foundations worldwide – growing its presence in the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East, Australia and South Africa. She also helped develop the 100%IMPACT network, within Toniic, which is a sub-group of families and foundations dedicated to “total portfolio activation” and peer learning by sharing portfolios, theories of change and how best to overcome obstacles to mission alignment. Prior to Toniic, at Omidyar Network, an impact investment firm created by Pierre Omidyar, Cohn Rupp managed a $70M portfolio of early stage investments and grants in the US, Europe, South Asia, West Africa and Latin America focused on property rights and microfinance. Before Omidyar, she held positions at Planet Finance originating microfinance loans in Central Asia and Mexico for socially responsible investors and in the public finance group at UBS Investment Bank, where she held a Series 7 license. She has served as a consultant to the World Bank and UNESCO focused on education finance in Sub-Saharan Africa.  

    She has been a board director to four international non-profits and two global investment funds. As a native of France, Stephanie is a dual French and US citizen. She holds a B.Sc. in Politics and Philosophy from Bristol University, a M.Sc. in Political Science from the London School of Economics and an MPA from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government with a focus on Trade and Finance. She is a frequent speaker at impact investing conferences.

    VINCE DIGNEO, SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIST, ADOBE

    Vince Digneo joined Adobe in 2013 as the company's first Global Sustainability Strategist. In this role he designs and leads the company's overall sustainability, energy efficiency, and renewable energy initiatives. He was previously Global Environmental Sustainability Initiatives Manager at HP, where he lead sustainability efforts for the enterprise business, data center infrastructure and HP Labs. Prior to that, he worked at Stanford University as a Senior Director of Natural Sciences, specifically focused on inter-disciplinary Science and Environmental Initiatives.

    Digneo became a Sustainability expert, first as a PhD student at Stanford, and later as the lead of all analytic consumables at HP Labs and Agilent Technologies. He is proud to have his name alongside other Stanford and HP researchers on at least two patents.
    Digneo holds a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry from the University of New Mexico, masters of business administration from the University of California, Berkeley, and graduate work in Biophysics and Biochemistry from Stanford University.

    JACQUELINE DRUMHELLER, MANAGER, SUSTAINABILITY, ALASKA AIRLINES

    Jacqueline Drumheller is the sustainability manager for Alaska Airlines, where she is on a mission to make her company the aviation leader in environmental stewardship.

    Prior to joining Alaska Airlines in 1997, she worked in both the environmental consulting industry as well as hazardous waste management industry.  During her career, she has tackled almost every single aspect of environmental protection and compliance -- from audits to underground storage tanks.

    In 2008, she co-founded Alaska Airlines' corporate sustainability program.  This has led to company-wide adoption of “greener” business initiatives and strategies.  Since that time, Alaska Airlines has published six sustainability reports, developed a formal governance structure and long-term sustainability goals, and has begun the challenging process of integrating sustainability into the business.

    Ms. Drumheller is an enthusiastic public speaker who enjoys turning dry technical information into something simple, fun, and understandable.

    Alan Durning is the executive director of Sightline Institute - an independent, nonprofit research and communications center—a think tank—founded by Alan in 1993.     Jessica Finn Coven serves as the City of Seattle’s Chief Resilience Officer and as Director of Seattle's Office of Sustainability & Environment. The Office collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders to develop innovative environmental solutions that foster equitable, vibrant communities and shared prosperity.  

    Jessica previously served as the Washington State Director of Climate Solutions where her work focused on developing legislative and policy strategies to reduce global warming pollution and grow an equitable clean-energy economy in Washington State. Jessica first joined Climate Solutions in 2007 as a policy specialist and worked to further clean energy policy in Washington through the state’s Energy Independence Act, Climate Action and Green Jobs law and others.

    Jessica also worked as the program director for the U.S. Climate Action Network. From 2002- 2005, she was a global warming campaigner for Greenpeace in Washington DC. She also spent several months working in Beijing as a policy advisor for Greenpeace China.

    Jessica received her MA in economics and energy policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and her BA in Mandarin from Barnard College, Columbia University. She lives in Seattle with her husband and two young children.

    KARA H. HURST, DIRECTOR, WORLDWIDE SUSTAINABILITY, AMAZON

    Kara Hurst leads the development and evolution of sustainability and social responsibility at Amazon worldwide.  Utilizing Amazon's scale, speed and innovation, Hurst’s teams focus on Amazon’s key social and environmental opportunities across all of Amazon's business areas globally.  Our programs include responsible supply chain management, social responsibility in Amazon operations, Frustration Free Packaging and eCommerce packaging standards, renewable energy and energy efficiency, eWaste, product take-back, hazardous waste, and social and environmental policy setting.

    Previous to Amazon, Hurst served as the CEO of The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) - named one of Scientific American's "Top Ten World Changing Ideas" of 2012. With over $2.4 trillion in revenue, TSC members consist of leading corporations, NGOs, Universities and government and regulatory agencies. Through this network, TSC members form a global, collaborative network focused on building a foundation of scientifically based business tools to drive improvements in consumer product sustainability. 

    Prior to TSC, Hurst served as Vice President of BSR, where she spent eleven years.  Hurst built several global industry practices, led BSR's NY and DC offices, as well the global partnership practice with governments, multi-laterals and foundations. Hurst also oversaw the annual BSR Conference. 

    Previous other work includes: as a founding member of the EICC, Hurst initiated the original EICC working group, bringing together six large technology companies, and facilitated the industry initiative in responsible supply chain management through its first several years, including constructing the Code of Conduct. Hurst also applied this concept to other sectors, including pharmaceuticals, to establish meaningful industry partnerships such as the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Initiative (PSCI). Hurst worked with GE's corporate citizenship team for eight years as well as Hyatt's executive team to build their first CSR platform.

    Prior to BSR, Hurst worked in Silicon Valley as Executive Director of the public-private venture OpenVoice and as a Manager of Corporate Affairs for the Children’s Health Council.  Early in her career, she has held roles at the Urban Institute as a Research lead and worked for two elected officials – Mayor Willie Brown of San Francisco and in New York for the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY).

    GOVERNOR JAY INSLEE, GOVERNOR, STATE OF WASHINGTON

    Jay Inslee is a fifth-generation Washingtonian who grew up in the Seattle area. His father, Frank, was a high school teacher and coach. His mother worked as a sales clerk at Sears & Roebuck. Jay worked his way through college and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in economics before earning his law degree at Willamette University. He and his wife, Trudi, then moved to Selah where Jay worked as a prosecutor and they raised their three sons.

    Jay first became involved in public service in 1985 when he and Trudi helped lead the effort to build a new public high school in Selah. Motivated to fight against proposed funding cuts for rural schools, Jay went on to represent the 14th Legislative District in the state House of Representatives. He continued serving communities in the Yakima Valley when he was elected to Congress in 1992. The Inslees later moved back to the Puget Sound area where Jay was elected to Congress in 1998, serving until 2012.

    Jay and Trudi are proud grandparents of three. Besides writing and illustrating books for his grandchildren and sketching scenes from around Washington, Jay is an avid cyclist and charter member of Hoopaholics.

    During his time in Congress, Jay became known as a forward-thinking leader, especially on issues of clean energy and the environment. He co-wrote a book, "Apollo's Fire: Igniting America's Clean-Energy Economy," about the job-creating potential of the clean tech industry. As governor, Jay's top priority is growing Washington's innovative industries such as clean energy, IT and life sciences, and strengthening existing industries such as aerospace, agriculture, maritime and military. Since 2013, Washington has experienced a seven-year low in unemployment rates, record exports and notable growth in Washington’s key industries.

    To continue growing these industries, Jay knows we must strengthen our schools so we can better equip our children to compete for these good-paying jobs. And we must bring a new culture of efficiency and performance to state government to more efficiently serve the people and businesses throughout Washington state.

    John Kelly is senior vice president of Global Responsibility, Community and Public Policy at Starbucks where he oversees the development and execution of Starbucks strategies and functions including corporate responsibility, ethical sourcing and environmental impact, public policy and government affairs for all brands across all business units and geographic regions. He is based at the corporate headquarters in Seattle, Washington. 

    Before beginning his role at Starbucks in 2013, John worked at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington where he led a variety of global policy, regulatory, and political initiatives over his 15-year career there. His most recent position was Vice President of the Industry Affairs Group in Microsoft’s Legal and Corporate Affairs Department. Prior to this assignment, John worked in Europe as the leader of Corporate Affairs for Europe, Middle East, and Africa where he led policy and corporate social responsibility strategies. He then returned to Redmond to help start-up Microsoft’s citizenship program. He was one of the early members of its Government Affairs organization, helping steward the growth and importance of that organization to Microsoft. Before Microsoft, John worked for nearly a decade in Washington, D.C. in a variety of government policy roles.

    John graduated from Stanford University with a B.A. in political science in 1988. He earned his law degree from the Washington College of Law in 1993 and is a member of the Washington State Bar. John is a member on the Nature Conservancy Business Council and sits on the board of the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Coalition. 

    John lives with his wife and three children in Kirkland, Washington. His favorite coffee is Aged Sumatra brewed on a Clover.

    JAN KONINCKX, GLOBAL BUSINESS DIRECTOR FOR ADVANCED BIOFUELS, DUPONT INDUSTRIAL BIOSCIENCES

    With integrated solutions for the production of fuel from biomass, DuPont is leading the industry in the commercialization of advanced biofuel technologies in markets around the world. As the Global Business Director for Advanced Biofuels at DuPont since 2007, Jan is responsible for driving the business models and commercialization for the company’s cellulosic ethanol and biobutanol technologies.

    In this position, Jan has championed renewable transportation fuels, testifying before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works in 2011 and the Senate Committee on Agriculture in 2014, and as a speaker at a variety of industry conferences and events, such as SXSWEco 2016, The Atlantic’s Next Generation Energy Forum, the Biotechnology Industry Organization’s World Congress, F.O. Licht in Budapest, the Fuel Ethanol Workshop conference and workshops sponsored by the Biobased Industry Center at Iowa State University. Jan also co-chaired the International Ligno-Cellulosic Ethanol conference in Brussels in 2015. He has been quoted in a number of news outlets, including Politico, The New York Times, Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The Hill, USA Today, Des Moines Register, McClatchy News Service, Wilmington News Journal, Biofuels Digest, Ethanol Producer Magazine, and Chemical Processing Magazine.

    Jan has worked for DuPont for over 25 years, since he joined the company in 1990 as part of Dordrecht Works in the Netherlands. Early in his career, he gained 10 years’ experience in industrial operations, starting his work in Lycra® spandex fiber production and working in Teflon® fluoropolymer production in West Virginia and in Ethylene Co-Polymer production in Texas. In addition, Jan has held marketing and R&D management positions and had general business responsibility for a variety of chemicals and commodities.

    Jan received a DuPont Work Life Award in 2001. Prior to joining DuPont, Jan served as a lieutenant in the Belgian Army and began his career as a research assistant at the University of Maryland. Jan holds a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Ghent in Belgium and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland. He is active in his community and volunteers in a small organization assisting local homeless.

    SCOTT MAW, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER, STARBUCKS

    Scott Maw is executive vice president and chief financial officer for Starbucks Coffee Company. He was promoted to this role in February 2014 and is responsible for the company’s Global Finance organization.

    Prior to Scott’s promotion, he served as senior vice president of Corporate Finance where he was responsible for corporate finance, including accounting, tax and treasury. Scott also had oversight for all financial and securities-related regulatory filings. He joined Starbucks as global controller in 2011. 

    Prior to joining Starbucks, Scott served as CFO of SeaBright Insurance Company from 2010 to 2011. From 2008 to February 2010 he served as CFO of the Consumer Banking division of JPMorgan Chase & Co., having held a similar position at Washington Mutual Bank prior to its acquisition by Chase. At Chase and WaMu, Scott was responsible for all finance and accounting functions for the retail branch networks of the banks. From 1994 to 2003, he served in various finance leadership positions at General Electric Company, including serving as CFO for GE Insurance Holdings, Inc. in London.

    Scott graduated from Gonzaga University with a B.A. in Accounting. In his free time, Scott enjoys golf and spending time with his family.

    PETER ROGOFF, CEO, SOUND TRANSIT

    As Chief Executive Officer of Sound Transit, Peter Rogoff brings an impressive career of transportation leadership to forward the mission of expanding the regional mass transit system for central Puget Sound. Rogoff was unanimously selected after a nationwide search and came to Sound Transit in January 2016.

    Prior to that, he had served since July 2014 as Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy in the U.S. Department of Transportation, the department’s third highest-ranking official. In that role he led the development of policies for the department, generating proposals and guidance regarding legislative, regulatory and safety initiatives. His work spanned all transportation modes, including aviation, highway, rail, transit and maritime transportation.

    Starting in May 2009, Rogoff served for five years as President Obama’s Federal Transit Administrator. As the nation’s chief public transit official, Rogoff led the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) through a period of historic change. His administration made record-setting accomplishments and agency-wide process improvements that responded to America’s fast-growing need for expanded public transportation. He negotiated and signed a record number of full funding grant agreements with transit agencies across the nation to expand rail and bus rapid transit infrastructure.

    Prior to his FTA appointment, Rogoff served for 22 years on the staff of the Senate Appropriations Committee, including 14 years as the Democratic Staff Director of the Transportation Subcommittee, led by Sen. Patty Murray of Washington and Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

    In 2010 Rogoff was the first recipient of the Transportation Equity Network’s Rosa Parks Award. He also was awarded the U.S. Coast Guard Distinguished Public Service Award; the Lester P. Lamm Memorial Award for outstanding leadership and dedication to U.S. highway transportation programs; the Dr. and Mrs. William and Budd Bell Award for “tireless advocacy for seniors and people with disabilities;” and the National Chair’s Award from the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials.

    Rogoff earned his Master of Business Administration degree with honors from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University and his Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies at Amherst College. He is married and the father of two teenage children

    Michael Rohwer leads BSR’s work with companies in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. He also served in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) climate change and stratospheric protection divisions, focusing on mitigation and reporting for greenhouse gas emissions.

    Roston joined Bloomberg in 2011 to launch its sustainability coverage, after serving as a senior analyst on the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. He worked at Duke University’s climate change policy think tank, the Nicholas Institute.

    Previously, Roston wrote for TIME, in New York and then Washington, where he covered science, technology, and politics.

    Roston, who is fluent in Russian, holds an M.A. in Russian history, and a B.A. in modern European history, both from Columbia University. He lives in New York City, with his wife, Karen, and daughter.

    Susan Wickwire is the Executive Director of the Seattle 2030 District, a groundbreaking public-private partnership that aims to dramatically reduce environmental impacts of building construction and operations through education and collaboration in downtown Seattle. Previously, Susan spent over 20 years with the U.S. EPA and the State Department in Washington, DC where she worked on climate change - directing national programs, managing international projects and serving on U.S. delegations to UN meetings. A Seattle native, she received her BA in Political Science from Whitman College and her MPA from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University.

    RICHARD WOO, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, THE RUSSELL FAMILY FOUNDATION

    Richard Woo is the chief executive officer of The Russell Family Foundation (TRFF) in Gig Harbor, Washington. The Foundation supports grassroots leadership, environmental sustainability, and global peace.  

    Richard joined the Foundation in 2000, as the first executive director outside of the Russell Family. He currently serves on the steering committee of Divest Invest Philanthropy, the global initiative of signatory foundations fighting climate change representing combined assets under management of nearly $13 billion. He is a past board member of Philanthropy Northwest, the Council on Foundations, and Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy.  

    Before arriving at TRFF, Richard worked for nearly a dozen years at Levi Strauss & Co. in San Francisco on community relations, corporate social responsibility and philanthropy. He served for three years as executive director of the Levi Strauss Foundation—overseeing global grant making in 40 countries. Early in his career, Richard spent a dozen years in Northern California nonprofits working on community health and youth development. Richard earned an English degree from the University of California, Davis.
