Gregory D. Allen (retired) was an Assistant Chief Intellectual Property Attorney at 3M Innovative Properties Company, an affiliate of 3M Company, St. Paul, Minnesota. Greg joined 3M as an Advanced Product Development Engineer in 1985, before joining 3M’s Legal Department in 1989. His practice focuses on patent matters, including prosecution and opinions primarily in the chemical area, as well as IP agreements, including licensing, joint development, and government research and development contracts.

He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. and M.S. in Ceramic Engineering and obtained a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota. Greg is very active in AIPLA, where he served on the Board of Directors from 2015-2018. He is also a Fellow, and previously served as Vice Chair of the Professionalism and Ethics Committee, as Vice-Chair and Chair of both the Education and Patent Relations with the USPTO Committees of AIPLA, and as Chair of the Patent Office Practice Issues Group of AIPLA’s 25-member Special Task Force on AIA Rulemaking.

He has written and given presentations on a variety of IP-related topics, many of them involving patent application preparation and prosecution issues and IP agreements. He also taught IP courses as an Adjunct Professor from 1998–2011 at William Mitchell College of Law, St. Paul, Minnesota.

He is co-author of the AIPLA/Bloomberg Law treatises Patents After the AIA: Evolving Law & Practice and Prior Art After the AIA: A Practical Guide.
