CFPB Enforcement Activity Slows in the First Half of 2016

CFPB Enforcement 2013-16

The pace of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau enforcement actions slowed in the first half of the year.

The CFPB brought only 16 actions in the first six months of 2016, compared to 26 during the same period last year.

If the trend holds, the total number of enforcement actions will more closely match those from 2013 (27) and 2014 (34). Last year saw 56 total enforcement actions.

In other trends, the CFPB is continuing to resolve more actions administratively than in federal court. In 2015, 33 of the 56 total actions were brought before the CFPB’s administrative tribunal. Thus far in 2016, 11 of the 16 actions have been brought before the tribunal. Of the five 2016 actions brought in federal court, four of them have involved an individual.
