Chris Opfer is a Managing Editor at Bloomberg Law, covering the policy, politics and court battles that shape the way people work. Among other topics, he’s written about efforts to organize gig workers, how smartphones challenge the meaning of overtime work and what happens when robots take over factory floors and fast food cashier stations. He’s also delved into the money behind politics with looks at lobbying efforts and campaign funding contributions by key players in the labor and employment field.
A licensed attorney and member of the New York Bar, Opfer has been reporting for Bloomberg BNA since 2012. He started at Bloomberg BNA as a Labor Economics Reporter, tracking various employment-related economic indicators, and later reported on Congress and the courts before taking his current position.
Before joining Bloomberg Law, Opfer was a trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. He helped lead fair housing investigations and defended lawsuits against the department alleging violations of the Administrative Procedure Act and U.S. Constitution.
Opfer is regularly interviewed by outlets including Sirius XM, Bloomberg TV, and Bloomberg Radio.
Opfer was awarded a National Press Foundation Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowship in 2013. He earned a B.B.A. in Business Management from James Madison University, a J.D. from the University of Miami School of Law and a professional certificate in journalism from New York University.
