Practitioners recommend a five-step approach to dealing with nonqualified deferred compensation in an international context. The steps are identified by Ruth M. Wimer, a partner in Ernst & Young's Performance & Reward practice, during a webinar sponsored by the firm. Wimer says there are many exempt plans to choose from, including stock options issued at fair market value, restricted stock, or exempt compensation paid within the short-term deferral rules or provided under a broad-based foreign retirement plan.
