Getting Breaking Medicaid News Out Quickly

During my second week covering Medicare and health-care issues for Bloomberg Law, I had been periodically checking to see if Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D-Va.) signed the bill to expand Medicaid in his state, and the health-care news team was helping me keep an eye out.

Victoria Pelham, our Medicaid beat reporter, opened her Twitter homepage a few minutes after 3 p.m. on June 7, and the first tweet happened to be a photo by Virginia Secretary of Health and Human Resources Daniel Carey. His tweet appeared to show Northam signing the bill, but we couldn’t find anything else to confirm it, so I decided to reach out to Northam’s press secretary.

Within 10 minutes of seeing the tweet, I had an email confirming Northam had signed it, and we were off to get a story out.

It took our regular two rounds of editing, but we got the story out quickly and were able to tell our subscribers how we confirmed the story before it was publicly announced and give them historical context, all within a very short span of time.
