David M. Humiston is a Partner in Sedgwick LLP's Los Angeles office and chairs the firm’s Healthcare Practice Group. Mr. Humiston represents health plans, workers’ compensation plans, third party claims administration entities, and other managed care service organizations in liability matters. Many of the liability issues involve utilization review, benefits and claims determinations, ERISA, Medicare, bad faith, quality assurance, risk pool, IBNR, reimbursement, RICO, wrongful termination, behavioral health, breach of contract and unlawful, unfair, or fraudulent business and advertising practices.
Mr. Humiston is a member of several bar associations, including the ABA Health Law Section; the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA), the California Society of Healthcare Attorneys, and the California Association of Physician Organizations. He was appointed to serve as Vice Chair of the Membership Committee for the ABA - Health Law Section for the 2013-14 term. In 2013, he became Vice Chair of Strategic Activities for AHLA’s Behavioral Health Task Force. Mr. Humiston served as the ABA Health Law Section’s Chair of the Managed Care & Insurance Interest Group for the 2004-05, and 2005-06 terms.
He is recognized as a Fellow of the American Bar Association. Mr. Humiston is on the Board of Trustees for the U.C. Hastings College of the Law and previously served as President of the Board of Governors.
Mr. Humiston received his B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of California at Los Angeles and his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
He is the Editor-in-Chief of the ABA/Bloomberg BNA treatise Managed Care Litigation.
