What Industry Is Most Active in the IPO Market?


IPO Industry H1 2016Pharmaceutical companies have conducted the most initial public offerings over the last four years, with that trend continuing in the first half of 2016, according to Bloomberg LP data.  While the pharmaceutical sector remains active in the IPO space, the industry has seen a steady decline in IPO value since 2013.

What other trends have emerged over the last four years?

  • The five most active industries for IPOs over the last four years have been the pharmaceutical, biotech, healthcare, internet and software industries.
  • Healthcare was a popular sector for IPOS from 2013-2015, but is seeing declines in IPO count and dollar value in the first half of this year.
  • Internet companies led in IPO dollar value in 2012 and 2014, thanks to Facebook and Alibaba, respectively.  Pharmaceutical companies came in a distant second those years.
  • In the second halves of 2014 and 2015, pharmaceutical companies led in IPO count, but trailed or almost equaled software companies in total IPO dollar value.
