Groups that asked to speak at an IRS hearing tomorrow on proposed registration requirements for tax preparers are expected to focus on making the plan more inclusive and keeping fees down, as well as questioning whether it will really stop abusive tax preparation. One individual is expected to argue that the IRS's overall tax preparer regulation project is unauthorized and unenforceable. The IRS's proposed rules (REG-134235-08) would require tax preparers to use a single, distinct identification number, rather than several different numbers, when identifying themselves as tax preparers.
