IRS launches its new online tax preparer registration system, providing instructions on how to sign up for a unique preparer tax identification number that will allow the service to track tax preparers' activities. Launch of the new system marks the formal debut of the initiative, which will regulate, for the first time, paid tax preparers at the federal level. At the same time, IRS finalizes proposed rules (T.D. 9503) on user fees for preparers to obtain the PTINs, and issues final rules (T.D 9501) that establish the requirements for tax preparers to use the identifying numbers on tax returns and claims for refunds they prepare.
