PATENT COMPLAINTS DROP IN SEPTEMBER, TOTAL LOWER FOR YEAR

Intellectual property infringement complaints in U.S. federal courts were down in September, with double-digit declines in all categories, Bloomberg Law data show.

Patent filings saw the largest recent decease, falling 22 percent from August to September. Filings from January through September 2016 were down 20 percent, compared to the same period last year. The decline was led by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, which saw complaints drop 34 percent over that period.

Copyright complaints were also down, owing to a decline in activity this year by the past year's top copyright litigant, Malibu Media LLC. Copyright filings dropped 13 percent from August to September. Filings from January through September 2016 fell 26 percent from the same period last year.

Trademark complaints fell 19 percent from August to September. However, trademark complaints held steadier for much of the year, with complaints from January through September 2016 rising 2 percent over the same period last year.
