President Trump Silent on Paris Climate Deal in Congressional Address

The future of U.S. involvement in the 2015 global climate deal, known as the Paris Agreement, remains unknown as President Trump didn’t mention it during his first address to Congress earlier this week.

Dean Scott reports that no news may be good news for supporters of the pact. The president had vowed on the campaign trail to exit the deal, signed onto by nearly 200 nations vowing to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

Some Republican senators told Dean that it was no shock to see Trump sidestep the climate issue in his address, since the nature of these speeches focus on the new president’s policy agenda.

Trump’s views on climate are well known, the senators told Dean. The president has called climate change a “hoax” perpetuated by China, and since the election has vowed to look at the Paris deal “very closely” before acting.
