Public Unwilling to Give Up Tax Breaks to Reform Tax Code, Olson Says

Tax reform has failed to occur because no one is willing to give up their particular benefits in the tax code, IRS Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson says. “The dirty little secret is that we are all special interests,” she tells the American Taxpayers Association. “We all have our own favorite little provisions of the tax code that we aren't willing to give up.” While many are willing to say oil and gas preferences should be eliminated, no one is saying the mortgage interest deduction should be capped, or that something should be done about the exclusion for employer-provided health insurance, or the exclusion for retirement savings, she says. “This is where the money is.”
