Senate Commerce to Hold Data Privacy Hearing Feb. 27

The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee will hold a hearing Feb. 27 on data privacy.

Lawmakers are weighing whether and how to write a broad new privacy law amid a series of data scandals.

The committee has a “responsibility and obligation to develop a federal privacy standard to protect consumers without stifling innovation, investment, or competition,” said Republican Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the committee chairman.

Wicker, along with Sens. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is working on legislation. Other lawmakers have introduced proposals, as well.
