Smart CodeSM is an improvement on annotated code that uses machine learning to identify sections of court opinions (called “extracts”) that make reference to a particular code, rule or regulation and then ranks each extract’s discussion of the code on a sliding scale from “weak” to “strong”. It also offers the ability to search by keyword and to filter by date, jurisdiction, and legal topic.
Smart CodeSM is available for the entirety of the United States Code (USC), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, the Federal Rules of Evidence, and the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure. It is also available for codes, administrative codes, and state court rules across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The Smart CodeSM icon is located on the right rail, click it to view opinions discussing the provision being researched.
Each extract is assigned a Strength of Discussion rating. The rating algorithm looks for characteristics indicative of a substantive legal discussion (e.g., the use of legal terminology or citations to case law) and assigns a strong, moderate, or weak rating.
