Theodore J. St. Antoine is the James E. & Sarah A. Degan Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Michigan. Professor St. Antoine, whose teaching specialties were labor and employment law and contracts, joined the Michigan law faculty in 1965. He was Dean of the Law School from 1971-78.
Professor St. Antoine has been a labor arbitrator for about 40 years and was president of the National Academy of Arbitrators in 1999-2000. He was also a member of the board of directors and the executive committee of the American Arbitration Association. He is a past secretary and council member of the American Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Section and a past chair of the Michigan Bar's Labor and Employment Law Section. For 35 years he was a member of the UAW's Public Review Board, including eight years as its chair. He was the initial chair of the UAW-GM Legal Services Plan and is a past member and chair of the Michigan Attorney Discipline Board.
Professor St. Antoine is co-editor of a leading labor law casebook, now in its 12th edition. He has been a visiting professor at Cambridge, Duke, George Washington, and Tokyo universities, and has taught at the Salzburg Seminar in American Studies. In April 2010, he received the George W. Taylor Award from the American Arbitration Association for his contributions to industrial peacekeeping and the collective bargaining process.
Following service in the Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, he did postgraduate study in law and economics on a Fulbright grant at the London School of Economics. He also practiced labor law in Washington, D.C., for seven years with Woll, Mayer & St. Antoine.
He is a graduate of Fordham College and Michigan Law School.
