Wastewater is used water. And you use probably 80 gallons to 100 gallons of water each day just brushing your teeth, taking a shower and doing other everyday things at home, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
All that dirty water that you spit down the drain or flush down the toilet gets recycled at wastewater treatment plants, like Alexandria Renew Enterprises in Alexandria, Va. These facilities treat it and then discharge the treated water back into local waterways. About 16,000 municipal wastewater treatment facilities operate nationwide, according to the EPA.
Bloomberg BNA reporter Amena Saiyid took a spin around AlexRenew with its Chief Executive Officer Karen Pallansch who explained some innovative technologies the facility uses to treat wastewater.
