Why NIH's Cancer Chief Thinks We're Making History

Norman E. “Ned” Sharpless took the helm of the National Cancer Institute on Oct. 17, 2017. As NCI director, Sharpless leads the largest of the 27 institutes and centers in the National Institutes of Health, overseeing a more than $5 billion annual budget. He is the only other position at the agency beside the NIH director who must be presidentially nominated.


Sharpless spoke with Bloomberg Law on Jan. 24 about his why he thinks this is an exciting time to serve as NCI director, his concerns about the high costs of the high costs of these treatments, and why he thinks those costs will come down.
